Dancin’ Oxford 2016, 26th February-7th March

This year Oxford celebrates the 10th anniversary of its very own springtime dance festival in Dancin’ Oxford 2016.  Watch out for an action packed 11 days including performances by locally based companies and visiting national and international artists, as well as a host of enticing workshops in a range of genres.  Here is a calendar of performance dates for your diary with links to further information and booking:

Friday 26th-Saturday 27th February, Pegasus Theatre:

Moving With the Times.  The annual platform of new work by Oxford dance artists includes Dancin’ Oxford & Pegasus commissioned pieces from in.motion dance (contemporary), Body Politic (hip hop) and Drishti Dance (contemporary/kathak) and We Were Youth, choreographed and performed by 3 male dancers who started dancing in Oxford and are now at the top of their game, dancing with such international companies as DV8, Hofesh Shechter and Peeping Tom.

Saturday 27th February, Bonn Square:

Dancin’ Spaces.  Celebratory open air free performances in the city centre; companies performing Hawk Dance Theatre, infuse DANCE, Granny Turismo, Company Chameleon, Ajos Dance and Sole Rebel Tap.

Monday 29th February, Old Fire Station:

Leap Day Dancing.  A special programme of works featuring dance, live music and film to join Dancin’ Oxford’s tenth anniversary celebrations. Including Oxford artists Crossover Intergenerational Dance, Joëlle Pappas Projects, Susie Crow, Paulette Mae, Alan Hutson and the UK premier of Jos Baker’s new solo work Of No Fixed Abode.

Wednesday 2nd March, The North Wall:

In The Happiness  Karla Shacklock Company combine choreography, spoken word and live sound in fast and furious devised physical theatre.

Friday 4th- Saturday 5th March, Old Fire Station:

Duet Squared and More.  Joëlle Pappas choreographs and directs a poetic programme of contemporary dance to piano duets by Maurice Ravel and Erik Satie, played live by Diana Hinds and Elizabeth Kreager. The evening also presents dance to compositions by Douglas Young and Benjamin Britten.

Friday 4th-Saturday 5th March, Oxford Playhouse:

Thomas Noone and Mercat de los Flors Barcelona present the UK premiere of Medea, Noone’s powerful version of Euripides’ ancient tragedy, an exquisite evening of dance packed with emotional charge.

The Black Album. A triple bill in which three distinctly different hip hop choreographies are woven together like a concept album, taking you on a soulful journey through many shades of black.

Lunas Dance Project: Summer Intensive Final Performance at Old Fire Station Saturday 25 July 2015

Lunas Dance Project’s Summer Intensive students and company dancers will be presenting a compilation of dance pieces and extracts of Of Myths, Perspectives and Transformations at the Old Fire Station on Saturday 25th July.  Lunas Dance Project Summer Intensive is a five-day course led by director Ellie Aldegheri aiming to develop the professional within the student, including technique study, a mock audition, and a final show with the company.  The intensive focuses on developing well rounded dancers by exposing the participants to a variety of disciplines with an emphasis on contemporary dance, the mission to provide the tools to become strong and reliable professionals.  The final showcase performance offers a chance to see a new generation of dancers in development.

Oxford Dance Forum presents: Dance Scratch Night, Old Fire Station, Tuesday 21 July 2015

On each Scratch Night at the Old Fire Station, local and regional theatre performers, comedians or dance artists perform works in progress for audiences to watch and give feedback on.  This month, DANCE SCRATCH takes place, supported by the wonderful organisation, Oxford Dance Forum (ODF) on Tuesday 21st July.  Dancers get a chance to try out works-in-progress in a safe space; for audiences it is an opportunity to see new dance work and give feedback.  Artists presenting on this occasion are Butoh group Cafe Reason, Paulette Mae, Anuradha Chaturvedi & Meena Anand, and Roosa Leimu-Brown & Anja Meinhardt.

 

Stop press – Two old instruments work in progress at URC 20th July cancelled

An unexpected side effect of glorious summer heat… Over the last weekend some of the acoustic panels on the ceiling of United Reformed Church Hall have fallen off.  The Hall is therefore not safe to use for the time being until the problem is sorted. So all remaining classes and activities of this term have had to be cancelled, and sadly also the planned showing of work in progress on Two old instruments on Saturday 20th July.  Please do pass this information on to any friends and colleagues who may have been planning to come to activities at the Hall over the next week; there will still be work in progress by Oxford dance makers to be seen on Friday 26th July at the Old Fire Station, see the previous post…

DEC in Luminous Shadows at the Old Fire Station 23rd May 2013 – Paul Medley reviews

The intimacy of the auditorium combined with the technical range of the Old Fire Station theatre make it an excellent venue for the DEC Project. DEC’s unique combination of dance, music and real-time visual art, with significant elements of improvisation, make heavy demands on set-up and technology. In their performance at the Old Fire Station on Friday all three elements of the performance worked together from the audience perspective. The musicians, Malcolm Atkins and Bruno Guastalla, were visible but not imposing on any sight lines, the three artists, Clare Bassett, Kassandra Isaacson and Susan Moxley, were sitting centrally, visible but not within the performance area thus leaving the stage free for the two dancers, Ana Barbour and Susie Crow.

 

Luminous Shadows – DEC Drawing Dance in performance at Old Fire Station 23rd May 2013

DEC is an Oxford based group of established musicians, dancers and visual artists, who explore the interactions between their media through improvised performance and video projection.  Luminous Shadows shows them in action in a selection of poetic and playful collaborations both structured and spontaneous.  This innovative live creative experience has proved fascinating and engaging for audiences, with its unpredictability and intimacy in the moment.

Since 2010 DEC has performed in Oxford at the Pegasus Theatre, OVADA Gallery, The Story Museum and The Old Fire Station, at the Cambridge Festival of Ideas, and has collaborated with the Oxford Improvisers and poets such as Vahni Capildeo and Robin Kirkpatrick.  DEC artists regularly exhibit their work.

 

PointZero Physical Theatre present “RECYCLE: Disposable Lives” at Old Fire Station 15th/16th March 2013

PointZero Physical Theatre present the premiere performance of their physical/dance-theatre production piece – RECYCLE: Disposable Lives for 2-nights only at the Old Fire Station (OFS) on 15th & 16th March 2013.  This works-in-progress professional premiere performance finally arrives over 12-months after its initial thought-conception; it has been developed with workshops, devising sessions and rehearsals taking place in 4 different countries and includes a 10-piece cast from 5 different countries.  The company is particularly excited to re-collaborate with and include PointZero Associate and award-winning professional dancer/performer Nathalie Frossard from Switzerland within the company for Recycle.   Nathalie is a highly accomplished, world-class professional contemporary dancer & dance-theatre performer who has been collaborating with PointZero Physical Theatre for 10 years.

 

Dancin’ Oxford brings dance to the streets of Oxford 1st-11th March 2013

Dancin’ Oxford, 1 – 11 March 2013, has 6 fabulous free street dance events in addition to an exciting array of performances in the city’s venues. Participants are professional and amateur, choreographers and dancers mostly from Oxfordshire though with some notable exceptions.

 

Dance, Body, and Identity – Dance and Academia Symposium at Old Fire Station 9th March 2013

Dance and Academia: Moving the Boundaries presents:

‘Dance, Body, and Identity’
