Following last year’s Perpetua,  Cantata Dramatica are once again presenting work at Christ Church Cathedral.  Christ Church Cathedral Choir led by Stephen Darlington join forces with Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance to present Missa Aedes Christi, a new work by composer Francis Grier with choreography by Ross McKimThe work will be performed as part of Cathedral services on 16th and 19th June as well as in performance on Friday 21st June.

This remarkable work, commissioned in 2012, is the result of an artistic collaboration between the composer, Francis Grier, Stephen Darlington, Director of Music at Christ Church Cathedral since 1985, and Ross McKim, Director of the Cathedral Dance Project and Rambert School of Ballet and Contemporary Dance.  The first concert performance on 21st June will be preceded by two liturgical performances earlier in the week, one of which will also feature the dance, see dates below.

Francis Grier was the obvious choice for this bold and innovative commission.  He has established himself as a significant contemporary composer of sacred music and received much acclaim for the originality of his compositional style, reflected in major commissions for Westminster Abbey, King’s College Cambridge, Christ Church Oxford and St George’s Chapel Windsor, amongst others.  Ross McKim has significant experience as a distinguished scholar and choreographer of liturgical dance.

Christ Church Cathedral Choir is justly famous for the youthfulness of its sound and its daring and adventurous musical programming.  Unique in the world as both Cathedral and College choir, the intimate accoustic of its musical home, Oxford’s 12th century Cathedral, has given the choir a relationship with early sacred music and the rhythm and vigour of contemporary idioms which is second to none.  Rambert School is one of the UK’s foremost dance conservatoires, producing dancers with a powerful combination of classical and contemporary dance skills.

Funds for this commission have been provided by the JPT Family Trust (via Cantata Dramatica) and the Friends of Christ Church Cathedral.
