Oxford University’s most versatile dance group, The Broad Street Dancers, are preparing to take to the stage on 1st and 2nd of March at the Christian Life Centre (The Regal) for their third annual showcase – InFamous.   The show explores the highs and lows of fame.

The Broad Street Dancers have been active since 2010. They aim to bring together those with dance experience to compete, choreograph and perform. Their specialities include Arabic, ballet, belly, contemporary, highland, hip hop, Jazz, lyrical, salsa and tap dance. Many of the dancers have toured around the world, won state competitions and performed in professional productions. As a group they have performed all over Oxford, at UK university competitions and on Broad Street!

About the show:

Can we really expect those we place in the spotlight to cast no shadow?

In the first half, the group presents the familiar glamorous fairy tale with which fame is often sold to the public. Colourful tap and commercial pieces portray the excitement and extravagance of fame. An exotic mix of salsa, jazz and belly dance draw us further into this fantasy world.

The second half explores the darker sides of fame. In the lyrical pieces the cracks begin to show, revealing that the dream world is built on competition and pandering to the media. This brings inevitable self-criticism, creating the doubt which leads to destructive and erratic behaviour, exposed in emotive contemporary and ballet pieces.

Often our greatest idols are those who were so blinded by the bright lights, they lost sight of where they were going and everything that they used to be. It is with them that our story ends.

Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd March (7th Week), doors open 7.30 pm, show starts 8.00 pm.

The Regal (The Christian Life Centre), 300 Cowley Road, Oxford OX4 2AS
