Dancin’ Oxford, 1 – 11 March 2013, has 6 fabulous free street dance events in addition to an exciting array of performances in the city’s venues. Participants are professional and amateur, choreographers and dancers mostly from Oxfordshire though with some notable exceptions.

It’s tough to pick this year’s highlights, however a visit from one of the most influential choreographers in British dance Richard Alston (Friday 1 March, Oxford Playhouse) is a certainly a coup for the festival. For over 40 years his ground-breaking dance has wowed audiences and this is a rare chance to hear him talk about his career and the future of dance.

A first for the festival is a large-scale interactive projection in Bonn Square (Tuesday 26 – Thursday 28 February from dusk, Bonn Square), created by Oxford artists Naomi Morris and Neil C Smith. Meeting Point will capture film live dance and superimpose with other images on a wall.

This year there are 6 free outdoor dance events in the City Centre including the Festival Launch (Saturday 2 March, 12pm – 4pm), which will include Granny Turismo the dancing granny shoppers.  Cerebro, the I Just Wanna Dance semi-finalists, will headline on the following Saturday (Saturday 9 March ,12pm – 4.30pm) when the Dance Dome, an innovative 360 degree immersive cinema experience showing short dance films, will be in Bonn Square (10am – 6pm). In addition there will be numerous Dancin’ in the Street events in Oxford (Monday 4 – Friday 8 March).

Moving with the Times, the annual showcase of Oxfordshire-based artists, will again be at Pegasus (Friday 1 & Saturday 2 March); as will Sole Rebel Tap’s Tapestry (Monday 4 March) a tap dance homage to dancers of yesteryear; Balbir Singh Dance Company combining contemporary and classical Indian Kathak dance (Wednesday 6 March); Cerebro (Friday 8 & Saturday 8 March) .

The annual dance conference and a multitude of workshops and taster sessions are also included as is a performance from the international Jasmin Vardimon company at the Oxford Playhouse (Monday 11 March).
